The ABC’s of Safer Schools: Proactive School Security Solutions

By Jeff Wooten on March 10, 2025 in Access Control Systems, News

The safety of students, staff, and faculty is paramount, yet creating a secure environment in K-12 schools has never been more challenging. Primary and secondary schools face mounting pressure from parents, communities, and policymakers to implement effective security measures. From heightened concerns about violence to everyday challenges like monitoring unauthorized access or unwanted behavior, schools are searching for better physical security solutions.

Schools also face the conflicting constraints of limited budgets (often focusing on the lowest bid vs. best solution) and the tendency to have a more reactive approach that often defines school security systems. That’s why we’ve dedicated ourselves to helping school districts across the country transition to proactive, cutting-edge security strategies using a customized approach—that believe or not doesn’t bust the budget.

The Early Bird Gets the Best Security System

This is the time of year when school districts start evaluating their needs and allocating funds for the coming year. We’ve been speaking with school facilities and IT departments about upgrading their existing physical security system or implementing new security measures for 2025.

By planning now, schools can ensure that their investments in security technology and equipment aligns with district priorities and community expectations. More importantly, early planning allows for smoother implementation and testing periods, ensuring systems are fully operational and staff are properly trained before the next school year begins.

Textbook School Security No Longer Cuts It

Security measures in schools have shifted from being a “nice-to-have” to a “gotta have it.” However, many districts face significant hurdles:

  • • Limited Staff: Most schools don’t have dedicated security personnel, leaving facilities or IT teams to manage this responsibility.
  • • Reactive Systems: Current setups often rely on reviewing footage after an incident has occurred, offering little opportunity to prevent incidents.
  • • Budget Constraints: Schools operate within tight financial parameters, making cost-effective solutions critical.

At Data Link, we believe that schools should have access to more than just reactive security. They need smart, intuitive systems designed to prevent incidents before they occur. Limited budgets shouldn’t affect the quality of school security, especially when there are so many different effective and lower cost security solutions available.

Culture Club

There’s something that’s often overlooked when schools are looking for a new security system: fitting the system to the culture. There are lots of great products out there. We install many of them. But before choosing a product or service, it’s important to understand other factors, including the school’s appetite for recurring fees, level of customer support and system training, along with the vulnerability to new risks. Is the school in a rural or urban setting? Is there more than one building that needs surveillance? These cultural considerations should be considered at the very start of the process when searching for a school security system.

Proactive Security with Innovative Technology

Data Link works with a highly vetted network of manufacturers and service providers to offer schools security solutions that go beyond traditional surveillance. Here’s what we’re working with:

  1. Advanced Analytics

Our partners, including Sound Intelligence and Ironyun, use sound and aggression detection to identify potential threats before they escalate. The technology doesn’t record conversations; instead, the analytics software detects sound patterns associated with anger, fear or duress.  It then sends school staff a real-time visual alert or triggers an alarm, plus provides incident reporting and documentation. Other systems we’ve been using include Ironyun’s AI video analytics that integrate with a school’s existing cameras and Visitor Management Systems (VMS). These systems not only reduce the need for costly upgrades, but they also convert video into actionable insights.

Another key benefit of these systems is the reduction in false alarms. The school security systems can be programmed to “listen” for key words like “gun,” “knife,” or “bomb.” This capability is powerful, but it must be implemented thoughtfully. Our team works closely with school personnel to minimize false alarms by fine-tuning the system to detect only the most critical sounds and phrases.

  1. Crowd Behavior Monitoring

BriefCam offers solutions to track crowd density and detect unusual behaviors, such as a large group gathering unexpectedly in an area. They leverage video data to better understand and analyze incidents and behavioral patterns. These insights allow schools to more quickly address emergencies, more efficiently investigate events and improve operational efficiencies. There’s one hub for centralized alert management making it a good fit for multi-site campuses.

  1. Movement Tracing

Using movement analytics, systems can trace the paths of individuals within the school. This feature is particularly useful in emergencies, providing valuable information about where individuals have gone or highlighting unauthorized exits. Genetec offers a great product to help schools centrally monitor various school locations, manage access rights and automate lockdown. Their add-ons make it easier to scale systems efficiently but effectively.

Learning an Important Lesson

Most schools rely on security systems that capture events after they happen. While this can provide valuable evidence, it does little to prevent incidents in the first place. Our approach flips the script. By implementing proactive solutions, schools can detect and address threats before they become crises.

Imagine a system that alerts a school resource officer to escalating aggression in a hallway or notifies staff of an unusual gathering near an exit. These proactive measures empower schools to act in real-time, enhancing safety for everyone on campus.

A Collaborative Approach

At Data Link, we don’t just sell systems—we partner with schools to design and implement solutions tailored to their culture, budget and unique needs. From minimizing false alarms to ensuring seamless integration with existing infrastructure, we work hand-in-hand with schools and IT teams to make proactive security achievable and effective.

We recently worked with one of the largest school districts in Kentucky, that has multiple campuses. The school relied on a variety of systems built on outdated technology, with no centralized management, requiring logins to different systems to access the cameras. These analog cameras were also old, providing low resolution images. Data Link worked with a couple of schools in the district on a pilot program, since this was a major upgrade, with changes to the system, equipment and cabling. Once the benefits were clear, the rest of the schools came on board. The upgrades have allowed the school to integrate their systems, providing real-time data sharing, quicker response times, less time trouble shooting and improved operational efficiency. The system was built to not only take care of current physical security needs but anticipate future growth and technological advancements.

Best In Class

The pressure to enhance school security isn’t going away—but with the right tools, schools can meet these demands without overwhelming staff or budgets. Data Link’s innovative systems and customized security solutions help schools create safer environments where students can focus on learning and teachers can focus on teaching. Together, we can lead the charge in transforming school security from reactive to proactive, ensuring every child’s and staff’s right to a safety.
